About Us

We are based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

We provide pet owners with a low cost, online Animal Health Certificate (AHC) service.

We comply with the official pet travel regulations.

A valid AHC enables an owner to travel with their cats, dogs or ferrets to the EU and Northern Ireland, Switzerland and Norway.

At AHC.PetVet we aim to make the EU pet travel process smooth, affordable and stress-free.

Animal Health Certificates     AHCs

An AHC is required when you take your pet dog, cat or ferret to the EU and N Ireland.  The document is issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV).

Each pet must be microchipped and have a valid rabies vaccine.  The rabies vaccine must be given at least 21 days before travel with day zero as the vaccination day.  The OV must check and validate that these requirements have been met and that the pet is fit to travel.

The AHC can be issued within 10 days of travel.  They are valid for up to 4 months of onward travel in the EU and re entry into the UK.  Norway and Switzerland also accept AHCs.

There are certain ports of entry available for pet travel into the EU and NI. The owner needs to check that they are travelling through a correct port of entry.

Before returning to the UK dogs must be given a tapeworm treatment 24-120 hours before re entry.  This must be given by an EU veterinarian and recorded on the AHC.

A tapeworm treatment also needs to be completed 24-120 hours before dogs travel to Norway, Finland, Malta and NI and recorded on the AHC by the UK veterinarian.

We would ask you to complete our questionnaire and we would request rabies vaccination details from your regular veterinary surgeon.

  • What is an Animal Health Certificate?
An Animal Health Certificate permits the travel of pet cats, dogs and ferrets to the EU. It allows the owner to travel through the EU countries with their pet/s. It is only valid for one visit to the EU and the return to the UK must be with 4 months of issue.
  • How long is the AHC valid?
The AHC is valid for 10 days to enter the EU and for up to 4 months to return to the UK. It can be used for onward travel in the EU during this time.
  • Can a relative or friend travel with my pet?
Yes. An authorised person can travel with your pet as long as you are reunited within 5 days of travelling to the EU or NI. Authorisation needs to be given by the owner.
  • How many days after the rabies vaccine can my pet travel to the EU?
Your dog, cat or ferret can travel 21 days after a rabies vaccine along with a valid AHC. The vaccination day is classed as day zero.
  • Where do you meet a customer to complete the AHC paperwork?
We will meet you and your pet/s at a public car park. Locations will be on the northern and eastern sides of Newcastle and the southern side of Gateshead. A mutually agreed time and place will be arranged.
  • How many dogs, cats or ferrets can be certified on one AHC?
Up to five pets can be certified on one AHC.
  • Does my pet need to be given a tape wormer before returning to the UK?
Yes. A veterinary surgeon in the EU needs to administer a tapeworm treatment to your pet 24-120 hours before returning to the UK. They must complete and sign the tapeworm treatment section on the AHC.
  • Is a Pet Passport valid instead of an AHC?
ONLY if it is an EU issued pet passport and the rabies vaccines would have to be up to date. The old UK issued pet passports are no longer valid and have been replaced by the AHC. NB- UK vets cannot add rabies vaccines to an EU pet passport.
  • Do you complete 'Fit to Fly' certificates for my cat or dog travelling to the USA?
We may be able to examine your pet and complete paperwork for you to travel to the USA. Please check with the specific US state department as to the pet entry requirements and then contact us to discuss your potential travel plans.
